It has recently been agreed that HZAU and UA establish a joint laboratory (called Virtual Center) on crop functional genomics. The goal of the Virtual Center is to strengthen a long-term relationship of collaborative research and training of scientists and students, and to promote and conduct scientific research in plant functional genomics on agricultural crops and food production through synergistic and complementary research that will benefit both Parties.
OBJECTIVE
|
- engage in joint research projects; The research areas will include, but not be limited to, the following themes: functional genomics, genetic and genomic resource creation, epigenetics, abiotic stress, reproductive development and evolution, disease resistance of crop plants.
- provide specific expertise at the request of the other Party;
- train personnel and students for each other Party;
- exchange personnel and students between the two Parties;
- publish joint technical and scientific papers;
- co-organize seminars, symposia, and conferences; and
- develop a system to determine ownership and management of intellectual property resulting from the HZAU and UA collaborations.
|
PLATFORM AND APPROACHES
|
A) The Principal Investigators/faculty (PIs) that will participate in the joint laboratory may include, but not be limited to the PIs from UA and HZAU in the list.
B) Proposed activities (over a 5 year period from 2007)
- Each year, two to five PIs from UA will spend about 2 weeks to conduct research and participate in teaching classes of special topics at HZAU;
- Each year, four to six students/postdoctoral researchers at HZAU will be jointly advised by HZAU and UA PIs/faculty;
- Each year, two or more junior researchers and/or students will conduct research activities for three to six months in UA at the expense of HZAU. These activities will be governed by the applicable UA policies with respect to visiting scientists and students;
- PIs/faculty of HZAU will visit UA by invitation. These activities will be governed by the applicable UA policies with respect to visiting scientists;
- A bilateral symposium will be held biennially.
